As part of Diversity Week, Highbury College (part of City of Portsmouth College) invited Julie and her guide dog, Spencer, to come and chat to students on Wednesday 16th February.

As part of the visit, students had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Julie about guide dogs, visual impairments, and how she experiences the world differently to them.

Students also tried on special glasses that showed how different visual impairments can affect people. This allowed them to understand why certain people need support from guide dogs.

At the end of the event, the College’s Students’ Union President and two Course Reps presented Spencer with a brand-new plush toy and special treats as a thank you gift.

Highbury College Students’ Union President Lily Camacho said: “Thank you to Spencer, Julie and her husband for taking the time to meet us. It was interesting to learn about different types of visual impairments and we all learned a lot. Julie told us her story and was so happy to answer all our questions, and Spencer was so cute and calm.
