The travel & tourism students had the chance to speak to the globetrotting TV presenter about his career and time at Highbury College before watching his show, An Audience with Simon Reeve.
Level 3 90-Credit Diploma in Travel & Tourism student Nancy Beard said: “He is so friendly and really inspiring, I’m so glad we came to the show and were able to meet him.”
Simon told the students how he had worked his way from the post room of the Sunday Times to eventually become a world travel reporter for the BBC.
The former journalism student encouraged them to travel and experience the world by immersing themselves in different cultures.
Simon said: "It was really lovely meeting the students from Highbury. They were a really wonderful bunch and I wish them all the best in the future. The tutors were also clearly brilliant, thoughtful and committed. All in all it was a treat to meet them.! I spent a happy time at Highbury a while back learning the basics of writing, the law, and even shorthand. I was working as a postboy at a newspaper at the time, but I'd been given a chance to get a little bit of training on the job, and in many ways it was the start of my little media career. It says something about the quality of the college that many years later I can still jot down a shopping list using the shorthand I learned at Highbury."
At the start of the Portsmouth Guildhall show, Simon gave a heartfelt shout out to the students he had met and told the audience how his journalism course had set him in good stead to pursue his career.
Leisure, Travel & Tourism Tutor Amy Benham said: “We’re so grateful to Simon for taking the time to talk to our students and share his passion. Our students came away feeling really enthused and motivated. We’re always looking to find different ways to inspire our students about the travel industry, and we thought this would be another perfect opportunity to encourage them to explore their chosen career path.”
The tour coincides with his most recent television programme, The Americas with Simon Reeve, which aired on BBC Two earlier this year and documents his journey as he travels the entire length of the Americas.
