Don’t let course fees get in the way of your dream job, take it from former student Steph Fletcher.

Steph, who studied beauty therapy at Highbury, recently launched Cosham’s newest salon, Serenity Beauty Room.

Steph said: “I didn’t have a clue that I could pay for my course with an Advanced Learned Loan until the staff at Highbury told me about it. At the time, I was a single mum and there was no way I could have afforded the course on my own.”

Advanced Learner Loans are similar to university loans and are available to students aged 19 or above, studying a Level 3 or Level 4 qualification. The loan covers the upfront cost of the qualification and students are not required to make repayments until earning more than £25,000 per year.

Steph went on to graduate in 2015, receiving a Contribution to College Life Award at the College’s Celebration of Achievement event.

She added: “I know how hard it is for young people to work in an industry which can seem quite intimidating. Even though I was older, I was still nervous when I walked into my first salon. That’s why I am delighted to be inviting Highbury students to gain work experience, here at Serenity Beauty. It’s a really fun job and I love making people feel pretty every day. It’s a really great career because there are so many different avenues you can go down and I want to help young people realise their potential.”
