This programme has been carefully developed to correspond with the latest payroll standards to support learners undertaking the Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship Standard. It will combine work-based learning, off-the-job training (minimum 20%) and college education. Furthermore, incorporated into the programme is the IAB Level 3 Payroll Administration qualification, accredited by the International Association of Bookkeepers.

As part of your programme, you will be taught:
•    legislative and contractual obligations/internal & external reporting of payroll information
•    GDPR and computer security, employee records & ethical standards, principles of payroll
•    effective communication with employees and stakeholders, legislation, HRMC
•    gross/net pay, contributions, deductions, SMP, employer responsibilities
•    Sage Payroll
•    reporting, data back-up, new staff, leavers and record management.

This apprenticeship has been designed to develop the apprentice or embed existing knowledge of a payroll administrator role. It is ideal for aspiring professionals taking their first step into payroll or to further advance those who already have some experience of a payroll department and who wish to expand or formalise those skills.

Key day-to-day responsibilities may include gathering, creation and processing of payroll-related information to ensure employees are paid on time and accurately. This will be via payroll software, though its use must be accompanied by the ability to perform this manually, compliance with legislative and contractual obligations, internal and external reporting of payroll information to deadlines, effective and appropriate communication with employees and relevant stakeholders.

Apprentices must have access to real work that is valid and productive, providing opportunities to develop, practice and evidence knowledge and skills that have been learned. The employer is expected to provide and support the opportunity for off-the-job training for a minimum 20% of the apprentices working time. Defined as technical and knowledge development, this type of learning is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment. It can include activities, such as online learning, mentoring, role play, attendance to competitions and events, or revision and assignments set as homework.
Apprentices will be required to attend on two consecutive days every other month, throughout the 13-month course either classroom based or via our live virtual classroom.

It is a government requirement for you to spend 20% of your apprenticeship working towards your off-the-job learning. Off-the-job learning can consist of college attendance, homework/coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus a number of other tasks (more information can be shared). If you attend the evening class, then you employer will have to give you that time back off your working hours.
Students will have full access to the college equipment, facilities and resources. They will also gain access to Sage Payroll system to practice on. Apprentices and managers will have access to OneFile, our online apprenticeship portfolio which is used by the apprentice and assessor to track the apprenticeship.

Apprentices build a portfolio of work and workplace assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange onsite visits to observe the apprentice's ability and skills in their daily role. It is important for the apprentice to take ownership of their own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. The apprentice’s final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment.

You will be assessed by:
•    a knowledge test
•    a role simulation case study
•    professional discussion.

You will achieve a Level 3 Certificate in Payroll and a Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship Standard.
In order to join this programme, apprentices will need maths & English GCSE 9-4 (A*-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 and provide certificates..

If you do not have the required GCSE / Functional Skills grades or cannot provide their certificates, you will have to complete a maths & English assessment to judge suitability. Potential apprentices will not be able to achieve their apprenticeship without completing the above maths & English qualification.
Apprentices who complete this programme can progress on to a Level 4 qualification, including a Level 4 apprenticeship or into employment or higher education.

  • 19+ Tuition Fee indicates the cost of the core tuition and materials required to complete the qualification.
  • 19+ Registration Fee indicates the cost to register with the awarding body.

Courses below Level 3

You will usually not be expected to pay a fee if you are:

  • under 19 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August)
  • aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August) and are unemployed and in receipt of certain government benefits
  • aged 19–23 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August) and are applying for a course Level 2 or below and do not already hold a full Level 2 qualification

If you are aged 19 over at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August) and are not in the above categories then you will usually pay the advertised fee.

Courses Level 3 and above

You will usually not be expected to pay a fee if you are:

  • under 19 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August)
  • aged 19–23 at the start of the academic year (as of 31st August) and do not already hold a Full level 3 qualification

Advanced Learner Loan

If you’re 19 or older, you may be able to apply for a loan to help with the costs of a college or training course. The programme must be at Level 3 or Level 4 (such as Access). You won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £27,295 a year.

Course Fees

Current prices are published in our brochure and on the website. These prices are subject to change. The total price quoted is the amount payable in order to secure a course place. The total price includes tuition costs, examination fees, where applicable and in some cases, additional costs which relate to the particular course.

Course Cancellations by Highbury College

Courses usually run as advertised, but Highbury College reserves the right to alter or cancel courses in some cases. Students will be contacted and offered an alternative course if the original course they enrolled on is cancelled or closed by Highbury College. If no suitable alternative is available a refund can be requested.

Cancellation / Transfer Requests from Students

If a Student has enrolled via the Highbury website and wishes to cancel an enrolment or transfer to a different course they should contact Highbury College by emailing: info@highbury.ac.uk or by contacting the Advice and Guidance Team on 02392 38 3131 Option4.

Students will not be entitled to a refund unless the withdrawal from the course is due to exceptional circumstances (evidence maybe required) and then refunds will only be permitted if the withdrawal is within the first third of the course duration. A minimum charge of £50.00 will apply in any event.
