Highbury’s beauty therapy and hairdressing brought magic and wonder of classic fairy tales to life while showing off their skills this year’s Disney Reimagined themed Hairdressing and Make-up Competition.

First off, our Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing students who had the task of creating hairstyles with a Disney Royalty theme. Our Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Specialist Techniques and Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing students then had put together styles based on Disney’s The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Meanwhile Level 3 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing students showed off their skills and imagination using the theme of Visuals of Disney. Finally, our Level 2 Hair Professional Apprentices had to come up with looks based on Disney with a Twist.

External judges included owner of hair salon The Parlour Jess Davey, beauticians Lucy Horsman and Lucy Carnall, Chaniece Alderton-Collins from hair salon Molly Caswell, and Business Development Manager of Wonderful Life (professional hair & beauty suppliers) Stuart Harris.

Former Highbury apprentice and hairdressing judge Jess said: “With every year that I have judged, the students have put more effort in and have got better and better. This year they seemed nervous, but their work didn’t show it. The level of creativity has been really good and I look forward to judging them every year.”

Lucy Horsman, a former beauty therapy student and now owner of Enhanced Beauty - based at The Parlour, said: “It’s been really interesting to judge this year. I’ve seen a lot of designs that have been different to the usual idea of Disney. It’s nice to see the student’s imaginations and their take on each category.”

Stuart, one of the judges of the Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing round, said: “I’ve been really impressed. The competition has been really interesting, and it’s been good to see the development of their ideas, their mood boards to then how they’ve created them in real life, including the way they’ve used the products and presented their looks. Some students aren’t always in their comfort zone during a competition, but I think it’s been a good experience for them.”

Lucy Carnall, freelance make-up and hair artist and owner of Lucy Jean Makeup and Hair, said: "I was overwhelmed with the talent and hard work from so many students, their passion and creativity really shone through and was so lovely to see. Even though it made such a tough competition to judge for second and third places. First place was a clear winner from the start, with her attention to detail, perfectly blended colours and overall look! A makeup artist in the making!

Former student Chaniece, also a hairdressing judge, said: “It’s been amazing – the students have been really competitive, and they’ve encouraged each other as well. There were some really beautiful skills showcased this year with some out-of-the-box thoughts demonstrated. Well done everyone and I look forward to the game stepping up next year.”

Thanks goes to Ellisons, Schwarzkopf, Wonderful Life and Capital Hair & Beauty for their products, prizes and support of this year’s competition.
