Two recent journalism graduates have been shortlisted at this year’s National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Awards for Excellence.

Former Highbury College apprentice Connor Gormley

Jody Doherty-Cove has been nominated for Apprentice of the Year and Connor Gormley has been nominated for the Trainee/Apprentice Podcast Journalism category.

Connor, Trainee Journalist for internet radio station Winchester Today, completed his Highbury apprenticeship while working the Bognor Regis Observer. He said: “It’s been a pleasure working on Winchester Today. I’d never even dreamed of working on radio this time last year, and now it’s a huge part of what I do. Every week, I talk to artists, writers, poets and creatives about all the things that make them tick and it’s a dream. The creative arts are a big part of my life anyway and, thanks to all the training I received at Highbury College, I get to experience that world from an entirely new perspective.”

Highbury College, part of City of Portsmouth College, has been training journalists for more than 50 years. Just some of the College’s journalism graduates include BBC documentary filmmaker Simon Reeve, Times Radio presenter John Pienaar and Sky News anchor Mark Austin.

During the 18-month apprenticeship students complete the industry recognised NCTJ-accredited Diploma in Journalism alongside gaining invaluable experience within a professional setting. The NCTJ provides world-class education and training that develops current and future journalists for the demands of a fast-changing multimedia industry.

NCTJ Course Leader Darren Sadler said: "Being shortlisted for such a high-profile national industry award is testament to the hard work and brilliant reporting skills of these two apprentices. The whole teaching team here at Highbury is extremely proud of both Jody and Connor and we wish them luck."

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in spring 2022.
