Highbury computing student Jack Day has been named among the best web designers in the UK after winning Gold at WorldSkills UK LIVE.

WorldSkills UK Live Finals

Taking place from 21-23 November 2019 at the NEC, Birmingham, WorldSkills UK LIVE is the UK’s largest skills, apprenticeship and careers event and is free to attend. At the heart of the event are the national finals of the WorldSkills UK Competitions, which are run in 70 different skills across industries, including digital, technology, engineering, construction, and hospitality.

Jack said: “The finals were challenging, and I’d done quite a lot of preparation for the competition. I was really happy to have won and proud to be crowned the best.”

More than 500 of the nation’s top apprentices and learners took part in the national finals and Jack was joined by teammate Kai Oliver who also performed well during the three-day event.

Computing Tutor Will Marks added: “All the competitors did really well. It’s not easy to compete in these conditions with the public looking on. Competitions like this are invaluable, the amount of experience and confidence students gain, from regional heats through to national finals, is like nothing else. Every student should be encouraged to take part.”

The medals continued with Kevin Stubbs taking Silver and Dean Roberts clinching Bronze in the Inclusive Skills Horticulture Finals. Teammate Danny Walker impressed the judges and was also presented with a certificate of participation by the WorldSkills organisers.

Sector Lead for Foundation Prospects Hannah Parkinson said: “It was inspirational to see our students in action and they performed amazingly under the pressure of a live competition. We are so proud of their achievements and we can’t wait for next year.”

Designed by industry experts, the WorldSkills UK Competitions equip apprentices and students with the world-class skills needed to help UK businesses better compete globally.

Dr Neil Bentley-Gockmann OBE, Chief Executive, WorldSkills UK said: “Congratulations to Jack, Kevin and Dean for such fantastic achievements.

“The competition was fierce and the standards very high. All of their hard work and dedication has been rewarded and we at WorldSkills UK salute you all.”

Jack, Kevin and Dean will now have the opportunity to compete at the EuroSkills 2020 Finals in Austria, followed by WorldSkills 2021 Finals in Shanghai.
