Former Highbury beauty therapy student Harriet Charter has launched Portsmouth’s newest beauty salon using solely vegan friendly and cruelty-free products.

Vegan beauty salon opened by former student

The new salon, based in Londesborough Road, Southsea prides itself on using ethically sourced products and offers a range of treatments ranging from waxing to eyelashes.

Harriet said: "It was only recently I realised just how many everyday beauty products contain animal derived ingredients. I offer all the beauty treatments we love but with the added reassurance that the products are not derived from or tested on animals."

She added: "You don’t have to be a vegan to come and see me. Whilst I practice as much vegan as possible in my work life, it is difficult to maintain in everyday life and not everybody can adjust immediately.

"I have loved animals all my life and I’m hoping by encouraging my clients to think about how beauty products are produced and tested we can start a shift in the industry, just like we have seen with increased availability of vegan food in supermarkets."

Harriet completed her beauty therapy qualifications at Highbury College in 2013 and went straight into a job at a local Southsea salon.

Harriet said: "My time at Highbury helped me to gain the confidence I needed for a fantastic career. I had wonderful tutors who were very knowledgeable and supportive of us all. They helped me conquer any fears I had (especially when it came to treating my first ever clients in training!) and never took away the joy from learning beauty therapy."

She added: "I would encourage anyone thinking of a career in beauty therapy because it’s so rewarding being the person to make people feel good about themselves. The transformation of someone’s mood from first walking in to see you, to when they leave after their treatment is amazing! It can even be something so small and simple like just an eyebrow tint but it does wonders for their self-esteem.

"You get to meet people from all walks of life. Not only are you their beauty therapist but you’re there for them to talk to, there are happy times, sad times, and times when you’re both almost wetting yourself laughing; I’ve built up some wonderful relationships in the treatment room.

"If you want to look forward to work everyday then I would thoroughly recommend a career in beauty therapy."
