Luke Perman will be contending for Apprentice of the Year at The News Business Excellence Awards 2019.
The 20-year-old is completing a Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician Apprenticeship while working at business communications experts Easy Networks.
Of the nomination, he said: "It’s an immense privilege to be shortlisted for this award, and I feel this will be a great platform for me to promote the obvious merits in taking an alternative route to university. I believe this apprenticeship with Highbury College and Easy Networks has prepared me and given me the skills I need to advance in my career as a chartered accountant.”
Luke said that his apprenticeship has given him a hands-on approach in learning how a small business operates.
He added: “Apprenticeships are important because they’re another gateway into employment rather than going through university. I get to learn how the finance department of a small business actually runs day to day, which is something I don’t think I would’ve ever got to do if I went to university.”
The awards, now in its 18th year, recognise, reward and celebrate all the successful businesses and professional individuals in the local area.
Luke said that he has found his apprenticeship rewarding, saying: “My college has been supportive, especially my lecturers. It’s not just a lecturer student relationship, it’s also a professional one as well. I’m also grateful with how much responsibility has been put on to me [by Easy Networks], which can be quite scary, but in terms of development it’s been a good boost.”
The winners will be announced at a black tie dinner held at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Friday 1st February.
