Various departments from Highbury College have entered students into this year’s WorldSkills UK regional competitions including Plastering, Health & Social Care, Carpentry and Web Design.

Automotive competitors took the top four places in the qualifier at Jaguar Land Rover Academy in Warwick and two Beauty Therapists also gained 2nd and 3rd places in their competition.  After successfully completing his Diploma in Exercise, Health & Fitness with Distinction,  Highbury’s sports student Carlos Cuesta Mattila achieved second place in the Fitness Trainer competition in Basingstoke.

The most successful regional competitors progress to the national finals, The Skills Show,  which is held in Birmingham NEC in November and attracts 75,000 visitors.  This event is the culmination of the UK competitions and the opportunity for the students to show case their hard work, training and determination. Further success at The Skills Show could also lead them to qualify to compete at the international ‘skills Olympics’ in Abu Dhabi for WorldSkills 2017.

These vocational competitions are a great experience for students, giving them a unique insight into their chosen industry and offering a real confidence boost for their career prospects. Highbury College students have established  a history of success in previous national and international skills competitions, with Dan Levings achieving a Medallion of Excellence in 2015’s Web Design category in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Following his success Dan has gone on to secure employment in a leading Web Design company and continues to act as a mentor to upcoming WorldSkills stars.

As well as managing the national Web Design competition, Highbury College actively encourages its students to get involved in WorldSkillsUK competitions and sees it as a perfect motivational platform for students to fine tune their skills - providing a great experience and exposure to the best practice in their field of study.

The students had great success in the regional finals with a total of 6 students making it through to the WorldSkills National Finals in Birmingham in November with success in the following competitions: Network Infrastructure Technician; Advanced IT Support Technician; Advanced Network Systems Administrator and Web Design.
