IELTS Preparation Course

One of the world’s most widely recognised tests of English language proficiency, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a popular pathway for those seeking access to university study, immigration and professional registration.

Our IELTS preparation course is designed to help you improve both your English language and your Examination Skills. You will be assisted in this by our experienced and professional teaching staff who will help you achieve the best possible results.

We are also a UKVI-approved IELTS Test venue and you will have the opportunity to take the exam in familiar surroundings with us. The venue hosts at least three tests a month and the application process is straightforward (please note exam fees are not included in the price of the course).

The aims of the course are to develop…

Application process

Step 1 – Complete and return your Application Form

If you are applying for a General English or IELTS Preparation Course, please download and complete an application form (click here) and submit it to us with:

  • A copy of your passport photopage
  • A copy of your current and previous UK visas if you have been to the UK before
  • A copy of a university offer if you have one
  • A copy of evidence of your English language ability (e.g. an IELTS certificate) if you have one

If any of your documents are in a language other than English (including qualifications) you will need to provide an official translation.

You can submit your application form and supporting documents as attachments to international@highbury.ac.uk or post to:
International Office, Highbury College, Tudor Crescent, Portsmouth, PO6 2SA, England

Step 2 – Await an offer letter

If you have met our entry requirements for your chosen course, we will send you a letter of acceptance confirming your place at the College and provide details about accommodation.

Step 3 – Pay a deposit

Full course fee payment is required before we issue you visa documentation, which you will need to apply for your visa. You will also need to pay a deposit of £250 if you require onsite accommodation.

Step 4 – Confirm your arrival

You should inform the College as soon as your visa has been issued and confirm your arrival date and time. This will enable us to ensure that your accommodation is ready for you when you arrive. If you require a taxi transfer from the airport this can be arranged for you at additional cost.


Intensive General English Course

Our Intensive General English course is designed to enable you to improve a broad range of your language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and ‘everyday’ English.

Our experienced teaching staff will help to develop your English language skills and build your confidence for a wide variety of situations requiring use of the language.

We believe in taking a student centred, communicative approach in our classes. Our friendly, supportive teachers will enable you to practise and develop your language skills in a comfortable environment.

  • Language skills to increase chances of successful communication in English.
  • Knowledge of the English language in the areas of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
  • Cultural understanding and skills relevant to the social use of English.

Pre-Sessional Course

This course is designed for students who hold a conditional offer from one of our partner universities for Undergraduate or Postgraduate degrees. Our Pre-Sessional course helps you to develop understanding of UK academic culture so that you may succeed in your university studies.

There is no need to retake the IELTS test before joining university if you successfully complete this course at Highbury College.

The aims of the course are to develop…

  • The language and study skills required at a UK university.
  • Understanding of academic culture and conventions of UK universities.
  • Skills in the areas of autonomy and independent learning.

What is required to join the course?

  • At least IELTS 4.0 overall with no element below 4.0 (taken from a UKVI-approved IELTS test venue for Tier 4 applicants).
  • A conditional offer for a degree course from one of our partner universities.
  • English language requirement is the only condition on your university offer letter.

  • Continuous assessment to help both you and your teachers measure your progress.
  • Direct entry to your chosen degree programme on successful completion of the course.
