Highbury College takes English and maths development very seriously and will help all of our students, young and old to improve their skills to help them enhance their life opportunities.
At Highbury College, our English and maths teaching is all delivered by highly specialist, experienced teachers.
The College has specialist English and Maths Hub areas where all of the English and maths classes take place.
For all of our 16 -19 year old students you will study English and maths as part of your Study Programme.
For students who have already achieved a GCSE A* - C grade in English and / or maths then you will be given the following opportunities:
For students who have achieved a GCSE D grade in English and / or maths then you will study for a GCSE and work towards achieving at least a C grade GCSE in English and / or maths.
For those students with a GCSE E – G grade or students with no GCSE achievement in English and / or maths you will study a Functional Skill in English and / or maths.
Adult students are welcome to study for a GCSE or a Functional Skill in English and maths which will be determined by your starting level at application.
Before starting your course, all students will complete an initial / diagnostic assessment to determine your English and maths levels that you are currently working at.
All students will be set regular targets to help develop your English and Maths skills throughout your time at College.
Homework for English and Maths will be set at the end of every English and maths lesson.
You will be introduced to the College’s Digital English and Maths Online Academies during your induction. This is a great resource which will enable you to improve your English and maths skills in class, in the library or at home, in fact anywhere!
Attendance is taken very seriously at Highbury College, we expect excellent attendance from all of our students. Non-attendance is followed up daily and if you fail to attend your regular English and / or Maths session without a relevant explanation, then you will be expected to attend one of the English and Maths Additional Assessment sessions which are held Monday to Thursday between 4.00pm – 5.00pm. If poor attendance continues you will be invited to a special English and Maths Attendance Panel with your parents, carers or guardian.
Here at Highbury College, we want our students to do the best they possible can and exceed all of their expectations. For those students who are looking to stretch themselves, they will receive an opportunity to be recommended to join the English and Maths Accelerate ME programme. All students joining the programme are recommended by their English and Maths teachers. Students will attend additional specialist sessions in English and / or maths, which will help you gain a higher GCSE grade or enable you to accelerate your learning through the Functional Skills levels.
The College awards regular certificates and prizes to students doing well in their English and maths classes. There are also exciting English and maths competitions run throughout the year that all students can get involved in.
