“My course is providing me with a technical background which I will need to progress at work. For me the best thing has been my tutor.”HOLLY SPENCER
Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
We offer a range of technical engineering subjects covering engineering manufacturing and electronics. You’ll study various practical and theoretical engineering elements before specialising. In our modern facilities, you’ll work on the latest training systems in our fully equipped workshops. All of our tutors have worked professionally as engineers and bring with them skills and expertise from a variety of engineering disciplines.
Highbury College runs programmes from Level 2 through to Level 5 HND, in Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical, Manufacture, Welding and Marine Engineering.
Our City & Guilds Level 2 in Engineering can help students to develop and progress onto the BTEC Level 3 course. All our courses are designed to give a blended approach to learning, which includes academic and practical engineering work. This makes our courses easy to combine with other studies, and to progress onto further or higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.
"Highbury has a great reputation for Engineering and the course gave me so many of the skills I use everyday. I would recommend a career in Engineering as it opens up a whole world of employment options. "
"We do a real range of practical things in engineering including how to weld, build circuit boards and design things using AutoCAD. I absolutely love all my lecturers, before I started I wasn’t sure what College would be like, but once I started everyone made me feel so welcome!"
"I’d heard Highbury College was the best place to go to study Engineering and the course is a good mix of practical workshops and classroom study. After the course I plan to study civil engineering at university. "
"My apprenticeship at Airbus is great because I’ve always been interested in engineering and really wanted to get straight into the workplace, make money and actually start building the practical skills I’m going to need later in life. "
Prospects for trained engineers are good, especially in and around Portsmouth where there are many large employers, including Airbus, Rolls Royce, West Group and Veolia. Thanks to the area’s maritime history there are also lots of opportunities in marine engineering too with companies like Northshore, Burgess Marine and BAE Systems. Experienced engineers can earn £35,000-£55,000, with starting salaries at around £18,000-£22,000.
