Level 3 BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Travel & Tourism

This course is the first year of the Extended Diploma. It provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare you for further study or training in a range of different sectors including business, management, marketing, hospitality and leisure, in addition to travel and tourism.

Units include:

  • the world of travel and tourism
  • global destinations
  • managing the customer experience
  • travel and tourism enterprises
  • sustainable tourism
  • the airport experience
  • visitor attractions.

You will have the opportunity to gain work experience with some of the region’s leading organisations, such as the Mary Rose Museum, Village Hotel, Queens Hotel Portsmouth, Hovertravel and Portsmouth Guildhall. You will enjoy many trips during the year to top tourist attractions, as well as industry visits, talks and the opportunity to attend a three-day study break to an overseas/UK based destination.

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English.

The qualification is equivalent in size to 1.5 A Levels and it has been designed as a one-year full-time study programme. Your timetable will be made up of a combination of face-to-face sessions, online lessons and independent self-study.

Alongside this you will complete a minimum of 30 hours’ work experience in a travel and tourism related industry in a customer facing role.

If you have not already gained a GCSE in maths at grade 4 or above, you will also be expected to continue to work towards this.

The course is made up of six units, of which four are mandatory. Two of these units are assessed by an externally set exam. The rest are internally set and assessed through a range of assessments and assignments, including written reports, presentations and real industry simulated scenarios.

School Leavers under the age of 19 do not have to pay fees on any full time courses, though may have to pay for their second year if turning 19 during their studies. If you’re aged 19 or over you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply for and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,000. If you are studying a part-time course and you receive one of the following benefits, or you depend financially on someone who does, you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support. You will, however, have to pay any awarding body/assessment fees (unless you are on a first full level 2 course). * If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receive other allowances, you may be eligible to claim concessionary rates. If you are entitled to a fee concession you will be asked to provide proof of your entitlement. It is essential that you inform us if your entitlement changes at any time during your course.

You could progress to the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism.
