What are HNCs & HNDs?

HND and HNCs at highbury college

If you are looking for a work-related qualification that will advance your career, give you practical skills and can lead on to higher education, our HNC and HND courses are a great option.

Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas are job-related qualifications that are highly valued by employers. HNCs and HNDs are a mix of academic and hands-on practical and vocational learning that will develop the skills you need in the workplace.

If completed with high grades the HNC can be topped up to an HND, which can lead to the third year of a degree at university.

Highbury College Portsmouth offers HNCs and HNDs in the following areas:

What level are HNCs and HNDs?

HNCs are at Level 4 and HNDs are at Level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

How long does it take to complete an HNC or HND?

HNCs can take one year to complete full time and two years part time (or in other situations such as distance learning). HNDs take two years full time and can also be taken part time over a longer period. Please refer to a specific course for further details on the study options available.

How are HNCs and HNDs assessed?

HNCs and HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course.

What are the entry requirements for HNCs and HNDs?

To study for an HNC or HND, you will need a relevant qualification or substantial work experience in a relevant area. Most HND courses require at least one A level (or equivalent). You will also need to possess a good standard of literacy and numeracy - interviews are likely to include an initial assessment.

What do HNCs and HNDs lead on to?

Because HNCs and HNDs are designed to give you the skills for a particular field of work, they can lead straight to a career. You can also use the qualifications to progress within your current career, for example as a stepping stone to gaining professional status.

You can also convert your HNC or HND to a degree at university with extra study. Once you complete your course, HNCs can allow entry into the second year of a degree, while HNDs can allow entry into the second or third year.

How much will it cost?

A full-time HND costs £3995 per anum. Studying for a HND or HNC on a part-time basis will cost £1950 per anum. Please refer to the specific course you are interested in for details of the duration of study.
