Highbury win Health and Wellbeing award

A Highbury College initiative to promote mental wellbeing has scooped a national award.

A Highbury College initiative to promote mental wellbeing has scooped a national award.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing Initiative picked up the Health and Wellbeing Award at the fifth annual Leading the Learner Voice Awards, held recently in London.

The awards highlight outstanding practice in colleges where learners' views are actively sought, listened to and acted upon.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing Initiative encourages students and staff to take simple steps to improve their mental health and general wellbeing which include Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Learn and Give.

Maria Emmanuel, The Five Ways Project Leader, said: "We are delighted to have won such a prestigious award that recognises all of the innovative work we have been putting together to support and engage our students facing mental health challenges whilst studying in College."

Sue Ward, Head of Centre, Skills for Life and Work, commented: "This initiative is helping us to better understand the value of positive well-being in further education. It contributes to our work to promote equality, diversity and human rights in the college, not only through the inclusion and participation of students with mental health disabilities but also in helping us to recognise and respond to the vulnerability of other students and staff to mental illness."

The awards were created to recognise the contributions that staff, students and colleges make to their communities. The ceremony took place in London and was hosted by the National Union of Students (NUS) and the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS).

Ann Ruthven, Head of Learning and Learner Support at LSIS, said: "The award categories highlight the changing and evolving priorities facing the further education and skills sector."

The Health and Wellbeing Award is given to colleges who acknowledge that learners can play a vital role in promoting and taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing and that of others.

Karen Day, a Highbury College student who has benefited from the Five Ways project, joined Maria in collecting the award.
