Frequently asked questions

What is a Foundation Degree?

Foundation Degrees have been designed jointly by employers, universities and colleges and combine academic study with workplace learning. They have been specifically designed to increase employment and career prospects and equip you with the relevant knowledge, skills and expertise you need to increase your productivity and performance.

The Foundation Degrees offered at Highbury College are linked to some of the country’s best universities, including the University of Surrey and the University of Westminster. The courses are taught at Highbury College but validated by the partner university, meaning that the university ensures the quality of the teaching and learning.

How much does a Foundation Degree cost?

The yearly cost of a Foundation Degree at Highbury College is less than half what you would expect to pay for an equivalent course at university, making our courses as accessible as possible. Tuition fees will vary according to what course you are studying. Loans and grants are available to help cover the costs of your course and your living expenses.

You can apply for a student loan for tuition fees, which is paid directly to the College, and a student loan to help pay for living expenses. You can also apply for a maintenance grant.

What qualifications do I need for a Foundation Degree?

Entry requirements vary from course to course. For some courses you need only be in suitable employment and have the support of your employer. If you are aged under 21 you will need an NVQ at Level 3 or a National Diploma/Certificate or at least one A Level in an appropriate subject. Students over 21 without these qualifications will be assessed by interview.

What if I don’t have the right qualifications or work experience?

Highbury College has a stimulating range of Access to Higher Education Diplomas for adult students wanting to return to education and gain qualifications or a university place. You can study daytime or evening over one or two years and take additional GCSEs alongside your Access course.

Do I need to be working to enrol for a Foundation Degree?

This is an entrance requirement for some qualifications as assessment will involve you applying what you have learned in the workplace. Most students who are not in work are required to undertake an extended work placement. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange work placements, but Highbury College has more than 1,500 business contacts and will provide every assistance to help you find a suitable placement.

Am I too old to study for a Foundation Degree?

There is no age restriction on taking a Foundation Degree. However, as they are employment-related qualifications you might want to consider an alternative qualification if you are not planning to work again. The minimum age to start a Foundation Degree is 18.

How long does a Foundation Degree take to complete?

Hours vary from course to course, from about 7 to 20 taught hours a week for about 30 weeks a year. Extra time will need to be planned for private study and work-based learning of up to 16 or more hours a week. Foundation Degrees take two years full-time and three years part-time to complete. HNCs take one year to complete.

How is a Foundation Degree assessed?

Foundation Degrees are achieved by passing all the modules. Assessment varies from course to course but is mainly on a continuous basis. Assessment can take a variety of forms including assignments, written reports, presentations, practical exercises and online exams. Some modules may be assessed by timed exams.

Will I have any help to study?

All Foundation Degrees at Highbury contain a module designed to provide you with guidance about study skills and making the most of your course. Other courses at Highbury will contain a similar component. Additional help with learning is readily available if you need it.

What can I do after the course?

On completion of your Foundation Degree you should be able to progress onto the final year of an Honours Degree at your partner university. If you prefer, you could either enter or continue in employment. Your Degree will be recognised by employers and is likely to enhance your prospects of obtaining a good job or promotion.
