WorldSkills UK are skills competitions that run every year and encourage people across the UK to excel in their vocational specialism. The range of competitions is enormous, from bricklaying and stonemasonary to performing arts and IT.
Highbury College Principal and Chief Executive Stella Mbubaegbu CBE is a passionate supporter of the initiative and is a WorldSkills UK Champion for the South East, encouraging other colleges and organisations to get involved.
All students who participate in WorldSkills UK competitions at Highbury are invited to join the College's Skilled and Talented Academy, which provides coaching and guidance, as well as financial support in order to compete in local, regional, national and even international competitions, including WorldSkills.
Hosting WorldSkills UK competitions
In April 2010 Highbury celebrated a show of skills when three of its talented students won first place at the South East WorldSkills UK regional competitions for Beauty and IT, which were hosted by the College.
Student Kirstie Cripps’s polished performance put her in first place in the intermediate section of the regional Beauty heat in April, while Ayo Adegboye and Ryan Green set themselves apart from rivals in the heats of the WorldSkills UK Information Technology event.
Students with the top marks from the regional heats can progress to the national competitions and, ultimately, to WorldSkills London 2011, the largest international vocational skills competition in the world.
