Art and Design Summer Show 2010

An interactive art show heralds a new age of technology at Highbury College Portsmouth.

For the first time, the College's annual Art and Design Summer Show will this year have an interactive element to it as guests will be able to view video diaries and artwork descriptions from students as they follow an exhibition trail around the new Highbury Campus.

The innovative idea of using iPod Touches to access streamed videos during the exhibition, running July 5 - 9, is the brainchild of one of the College's youngest members of staff.

Ashley Whitear, 19, was taken on in the role of Learning Technologist last year just after completing a BTEC National Certificate in Software Development at the College, and is hoping the modern technology will engage visitors with the students' work.

Ashley says: "It makes it feel more authentic, like in art galleries where you are given a set of headphones and can listen to more about the art pieces. We have taken this a step further though with not just audio, but video too."

Maria Smith, programme leader for art and design at Highbury, says: "We thought the trail would be a really interesting way to showcase the students' work, whilst giving visitors a tour of the fantastic facilities we have here, which many will not have seen.

"I am really looking forward to seeing people's reactions to the student videos, and I think they will really enjoy seeing how the students went about making some of the exhibits. I am very proud of what the students have created."

With so many large scale and inspiring pieces permanently installed in and around the College, from canvas paintings to intricate sheet metal work, along with the new interactive element, the students are hoping visitors will enjoy the show as much as they have enjoyed creating it.

The College will be welcoming another 'first' in September when they will start offering A levels in creative subjects, including graphics, photography and textiles, and full-time specialised pathways in jewellery and interior design.

Visitors will be welcome to view the exhibition from 10am to 4pm. For more information about the show or to find out more about art and design courses at Highbury College, please call (023) 9238 3131.
