Case Study: The John Doyle Partnership

Portsmouth accountancy firm The John Doyle Partnership (JDP) has taken on Highbury College apprentices since 2000.

Apprentices at the firm work towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in order to become practicing members of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). The long-term connection between JDP and Highbury ensures that the company has constant access to quality trainees and support.

Kelly Palframan’s experience is an example of just how well Apprenticeships can work. She was recruited as an apprentice by JDP in 2002 after being put forward by Highbury. Kelly proved to be an enthusiastic and talented apprentice and achieved full AAT status in 2005. After her Apprenticeship Kelly remained at JDP and saw her role develop from assistant to accounting technician to signing off accounts.

In 2009, just seven years after starting as a trainee, she was made a director of the company.

Kevin Doyle, JDP’s Director, is a passionate advocate of Apprenticeships. “The Apprenticeship programme provides an excellent opportunity for young people to learn a trade or profession,” he says. “When the student, the college and the employer operate together the results can be outstanding.”
