Apprenticeships

What do Apprenticeships involve?

Apprenticeships are structured programmes, but Highbury can be flexible in the options and pathways apprentices follow dependent on the work role they are in.

Employers and individuals can choose from two types of Apprenticeships: a Level 2 Apprenticeship and a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships contain the following basic elements:

  • National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)
  • Technical Certificate relevant to the field of study
  • Key Skills

The NVQ has been designed by industry professionals and is based upon the occupational area and individual work environment.

Apprentices also study at least two essential workplace skills, choosing from communication, application of number and information technology.

Highbury is actively seeking employers to take on apprentices in the following sectors: Business & Computing; Construction; Engineering; Health, Care & Beauty.

Six key points about Apprenticeships

  1. Apprentices must be employed for a minimum of 16 hours by the company they work for.
  2. Apprentices aged 16-18 are fully-funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). A fee may be payable for apprentices aged 19 and over.
  3. College attendance is either day, evening or block release, depending on the occupational area.
  4. Apprentices are assigned a Training Advisor who will monitor and support the progress of the apprentice throughout their programme.
  5. The length of the programme ranges form a year to four years, depending on the type of Apprenticeship taken and the motivation and enthusiasm of the apprentice.
  6. A health and safety check will be carried out by Highbury College before we can accept a new employer.
